Logical operation of the search values

If multiple search values are entered for one search item, one of the following three types of search is executed based on the entry method:

Logical product (AND) search:  A search of material simultaneously satisfying two or more search values is performed.

Entry method:  Join each search value by " " (blank).

Example) Search for material containing both "Japan" and "USA" in the title

        Title: Japan USA

Logical sum (OR) search: A search of material satisfying at least of one of two or more search values is performed.

Entry method:  Join each search value by "+" (plus sign).

Example) Search for material containing either "Japan" or "USA" in the title

        Title: Japan+USA

Logical difference (NOT) search: A search of material, which satisfies some condition, but does not satisfy other conditions is performed.

Entry method:  Join each search value by "^" (hat symbol).

Example) Search for material containing "Japan" and not containing "USA" in the title

        Title: Japan^USA

*) To perform a NOT search, there must be at least one search value without "^".

If search values are entered for multiple search items, either of the following two types of search is done based on the entry method:

Logical product (AND) search:  A search of material satisfying simultaneously two or more items is performed.

Entry method:  Simply enter search values in multiple items.

Example) Search for material containing "Japan" in the title and "Fujitsu" in the author's name.

        Title:             Japan

        Authors name: Fujitsu

Logical difference (NOT) search:  A search of material, which satisfies some item, but does not satisfy other items is performed.

Entry method:  Enter a search value to be excluded prefixed with "".

Example) Search for material containing "Japan" in the title and not containing "Fujitsu" in the author's name.

        Title:             Japan

        Authors name: ^Fujitsu

              Keyword and literal searches

Two types of search methods, the keyword search and literal search, can be used.

In the keyword search, a search of material containing the entered search values as words (= keywords) is performed.

In the literal search, a search of material containing the entered search values simply as characters (= literals) is performed.
